Sarawak is Malaysia's largest state and is located on the northwest of Borneo, the third largest island in the world.

Totalling 124,450 square kilometres in size, Sarawak has a total population of 2.8 million. With more than 30 ethnic groups living together in racial and religious harmony, Sarawak or the Land of the Hornbills is often taken as an exemplary model of unity by other states.

Attaining full independence as a member state of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, Sarawak practices a unique administrative approach as it is divided into 12 divisions, namely Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Miri, Limbang, Sarikei, Kapit, Samarahan, Bintulu, Betong, Mukah and Serian, each headed by a Resident.

Kuching, which is the capital and administration centre of Sarawak, was declared a city on Aug 1, 1988, and the world's first City of Unity on Aug 1, 2015.
