BUKIT ASSEK REDEVELOPMENT SET TO TRANSFORM SIBU INTO MODERN URBAN HUB
KUCHING, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- The Bukit Assek redevelopment project has been described as a long-term transformational blueprint that will reshape Sibu into a modern, resilient and vibrant urban centre.
Bukit Assek assemblyman, Chieng Jin Ek said the project’s master plan is currently being finalised by the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) in collaboration with international consultant Ramboll.
He said once the master plan is completed and approved, it will be implemented through a comprehensive 15 to 20 year roadmap beginning in 2026.
“The commitment of the state goverment reflects the goal of ensuring that Sibu develops into a modern town with its own identity, one that integrates sustainable infrastructure, flood mitigation and economic growth with the needs of the people,” he said when debating the state’s 2026 Budget at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting here, today.
Chieng added the redevelopment area has been expanded from 497 acres to 830 acres, incorporating riverbank and swamp zones to ensure a more comprehensive, scientific and long-term planning approach.
The expansion, he said, will enable systematic infrastructure development to address long-standing flood issues while unlocking land value for commercial, residential and community development.
“The economic spillover from the project extends far beyond Bukit Assek, with the potential to stimulate the construction and service sectors and create more job opportunities.
“LCDA has also showcased this project at the Sarawak Mega Fair 2025 in Singapore, positioning Bukit Assek as an international investment focal point and highlighting Sarawak’s potential under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.
