50 CONTINGENTS TO PARADE AT MAULIDUR RASUL CELEBRATION IN SIBU
SIBU, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 50 contingents involving about 5,000 participants will take part in the Maulidur Rasul celebration for the Sibu division at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang on Sept 6.
Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman said the contingents represent government departments and agencies, statutory bodies, schools, higher learning institutions, mosques, surau, private firms, financial institutions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
He said the organising committee has also invited contingents from Iban, Chinese, Indian, Orang Ulu and Punan associations across the division.
“Participants from these associations will wear their traditional attire,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting on the event today.
This year’s 3.2-kilometre parade will pass through Sibu town centre, starting and ending at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, and covering Jalan Bujang Suntong, Jalan Pulau, Jalan Tukang Besi, Jalan Central and Jalan Kampung Nyabor.
Abang Mohamad Porkan said the event would also have contests for banners, the biggest contingent, costumes, and overall champion, with prizes worth RM18,000 in cash, 48 trophies and four hampers.
He said Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee would be the guest of honour at the celebration, which would begin at 6 am.
“I urge the people of Sibu to enliven this year’s Maulidur Rasul celebration. Let us use this occasion to strengthen bonds, express our love for Prophet Muhammad and strengthen unity among the people regardless of religion, race or political belief,” he said.
He also encouraged Muslims to attend Maulidur Rasul lectures to be held in mosques and surau across the division.
