KUCHING, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Holding the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2024 celebrations in the Land of the Hornbills on May 27 will indirectly give media practitioners from other states to delve deeper and learn more about the current development in Sarawak.

Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier Department, said the state government, through the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), plans to hold journalism industry-related conferences as part of the HAWANA programme to further enliven the celebrations.

"This is one of the major events happening in Sarawak, besides the 2024 Malaysia Games and other events. So, we will take this HAWANA (celebrations) seriously as an appreciation to all media personnel, not only in Sarawak but throughout Malaysia, to come to Sarawak.

"We will hold several programmes to ensure our media friends from other states get the opportunity to feel for themselves what is happening in Sarawak in terms of development so that they can have a first-hand feel of the state government's initiatives,” he said.

He told reporters this after the 2024 Sarawak Premier Perdana message here today.

He said that as host, the state government is actively collaborating with the Communications Ministry and the agencies involved to ensure the smooth running of HAWANA 2024.

Abdullah said he also plans to expand the involvement of media practitioners at the HAWANA celebrations and not only focus on the mainstream media.

"Definitely, everyone will be invited, I feel that we will try to invite our media friends, media associations and so on, including online media, to jointly give input to ensure HAWANA in Sarawak will be one of the best ones ever.

"Next week, we will meet the (Communications) Minister (Fahmi Fadzil) in Kuala Lumpur and those who are there to fine-tune plans for the hosting of this HAWANA,” he said.

Previously, Fahmi had said that HAWANA 2024 would be all the more livelier as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to attend it.

He also stated that the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) will continue to play its role as the secretariat for the organising of the event.
