KUCHING, Dec 24 (Bernama) -- People celebrating Christmas were busy making last-minute purchases at malls and supermarkets here on the eve of Christmas today.

A Bernama survey around the city observed people still shopping for food, and home decor as well as presents for friends and family.

The Kuching International Airport has also been crowded for the past few days as Sarawakian children return to their hometowns to celebrate Christmas with their families.

Civil servant, Grace John Lee, 31, said although it was a challenge to buy things at the last minute, she was able to buy some basic ingredients, including chicken for tomorrow’s feast.

"Even though there are fewer things on Christmas Eve, we could still buy quality items. Last-minute shopping can also save us money as some shops offer discounts," she said when met by Bernama.

However, amid the excitement of celebrating Christmas tomorrow, Sarawakians are advised to be vigilant and take preventive measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when conveying his Christmas greetings said that there has been a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the state this month.

He said 631 cases were reported in Sarawak during the 50th Epidemiology Week (ME) from Dec 10 to 16, compared to 310 cases in ME-49.
