BINTULU, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will be establishing a Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Faculty at its Bintulu campus soon with the aim of strengthening the agriculture and food security agenda, said UPM Chancellor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

“The establishment of this faculty is a result of a collaborative effort with the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak under the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development of Sarawak.  Congratulations,” he said in his royal address at the first session of UPM’s 47th Convocation Ceremony at Dewan Sri Kenyalang, UPM Bintulu Campus (UPMKB), here today.

The Sultan of Selangor said UPMKB has had many strategic cooperations in the field of research with government and private agencies and as of October this year, the campus has received RM1.27 million in research grants through public and private funding.

Sultan Sharafuddin also said that he is proud of the Sarawak government’s commitment to sustaining the Tok Nan Research Chair in UPMKB until 2027 and for also adding the PUSAKA-UPM Chair in the field of research and development of tropical forests and plant forests management, food security and renewable energy.

“I am also proud of UPM’s collaboration with the Sarawak Premier’s Office in the AgriHub@Gedong Padi Transformation Project, which in my opinion, is capable of having an impact on Malaysia’s food security, especially in increasing local rice yields in Sarawak,” he said.

In the meantime, the Sultan expressed gratitude to the Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, for his unwavering support and trust in UPMKB through cooperation with the state government towards achieving developed state status by 2030.

UPMKB has produced 8,413 graduates since the campus was opened in 2001.

Sultan Sharafuddin hoped that the graduates would continue to uphold the fifth principle of Rukun Negara, which is Good Behaviour and Morality, by maintaining decorum in their communication, especially on social media.

He advised them not to make inappropriate remarks or use language that contained elements of slander, insult and envy, especially concerning the 3R issues of royal institutions, religion and race, as such actions can harm the society’s mind.

A total of 487 graduates in various fields of study received their scrolls today - nine for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master’s degree (12), Bachelor’s degree (84) and diploma (382).
