KUCHING, June 9 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is keen to learn the paddy cultivation process from Selangor, to increase the state’s rice production.

The state Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said this is due to advanced paddy cultivation in Sekinchan, Selangor.

He said the Sekinchan area now has a 75 per cent self-sufficiency level (SSL) for rice, and provides a good income to the farmers.

“Hence, that will be our direction, I will continue to ask my officers to learn, especially what they (in Sekinchan) are doing,” he said when officiating the Ngabang Gawai event at RTM Kuching here, today.

He added that his ministry may use the method of paddy cultivation in Selangor if the process is suitable to be applied in Sarawak.

This is important for food security because Sarawak currently has only reached 38 per cent of SSL for rice, which is very low, he said.

He explained that, due to this, Sarawak has to import rice from abroad to meet its needs.
