SARAWAK ENERGY UNVEILS 'SERI BATANG AI', FIRST SOLAR-INTEGRATED ELECTRIC BOAT
KUCHING, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Energy has achieved a significant milestone in clean technology adoption with the official naming of its first purpose-built and solar-integrated electric boat, Seri Batang Ai, supporting its operations at the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant (HEP).
The naming ceremony by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg took place at Pangkalan Sapi here today and was held in conjunction with the Sarawak Regatta 2026, marking another progressive step in the state’s sustainable energy journey.
Fabricated by local company Global Fibreglass Industries, the 10-metre vessel features an electric propulsion system architecture and component layout designed entirely by Sarawak Energy’s in-house research and development (R&D) team.
“The e-boat is powered by twin 40 kilowatt (kW) electric outboard motors and a 92 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery energy storage system, supplemented by 3.6 kWp (kilowatt-peak) rooftop solar panels and grid-charging capabilities, enabling it to achieve a maximum speed of 25 km/h with an operating range of 40 to 50 kilometres.
“Accommodating up to 12 registered passengers, the vessel is purpose-built to support operations at the Batang Ai HEP, including dam safety inspections, environmental monitoring, and personnel transportation across the reservoir,” the statement said today.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy group chief executive officer Datuk Ruslan Abdul Ghani said Seri Batang Ai builds upon the organisation's earlier e-Penambang initiative, advancing from retrofitted conventional boats to a dedicated electric workboat that strengthens local engineering capabilities.
"Seri Batang Ai provides a platform for us to further develop our research and development capabilities, strengthen local engineering expertise, and explore wider applications of clean energy and marine technologies to enhance operational efficiency," he said.
Compared with conventional fossil fuel-powered vessels, the electric propulsion produces no direct exhaust emissions and minimises noise as well as vibration.
First showcased during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Batang Ai HEP in 2025, the vessel officially received its Boat Licence and River Transport Permit on Oct 21 ahead of today's launch, underscoring Sarawak Energy's continuous drive for practical and environmentally responsible operational solutions.
