DRY SPELL: 119 WATER TANKERS MOBILISED ACROSS SARAWAK
KUCHING, Aug 30 -- A total of 119 water tankers have been mobilised across Sarawak to mitigate the impact of the ongoing prolonged dry spell driven by El Niño conditions, which is expected to persist until April 2027.
The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUT) in a statement today said cross-divisional assistance and additional tanker support from other agencies are being coordinated to optimise deployment to affected areas, particularly those under the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) that rely on small rivers.
"Centralised water collection centres have also been identified at potential hotspots across Sarawak. To date, nine centres have been established in Sri Aman with 13 more locations identified in Betong.
"JBALB will continue to assess conditions on the ground and establish additional centres where necessary," the statement said.
According to MUT, despite declining raw water levels at several sources, major water supply dams, namely Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin and Sika, are currently recording normal water levels.
Meanwhile, communities are urged to practice prudent water usage and report supply issues through local leaders or agency call centres at 082-262 111 (JBALB) and 082-222 333 (Sarawak Water)
