SARAWAKIANS REJECTING RACIAL POLITICS, WANT DEVELOPMENT - ABANG JOHARI
SIBU, July 26 (Bernama) -- Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the people of Sarawak are increasingly rejecting racial politics and instead want a government that is capable of bringing development and improving their standard of living.
He said politics based on race and religion are no longer appropriate in the new era driven by digital technology, and instead needed leadership based on knowledge, ability and justice for all people regardless of background.
"The majority of the people want development and a better life, not racial politics. In today's digital era, what is important is wisdom, knowledge and ability, not race or religion," he said when speaking at the PBB Central Zone Special Convention here today.
Abang Johari said the success of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government in driving the state's development proved that the inclusive policies practised by PBB benefitted all people regardless of race or political affiliation.
Abang Johari who is also the Premier of Sarawak and chairman of GPS, said the appointment of Sarawakians from various races to lead Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and various government agencies proved that the state administration prioritised qualifications and merit in appointments.
"If a Malay becomes a leader, he must be fair to all. If an Iban becomes a leader, he must also be fair to all. That is our principle," he said.
According to him, throughout the six years of GPS administration, various infrastructure projects including the construction of bridges, roads, electricity and water supply have been implemented throughout Sarawak, especially in rural areas, thus benefiting the people of various races.
He said the achievement proved that PBB as the pillar of GPS was not just making promises, but rather implementing policies that would bring change and progress to the state.
Abang Johari also reminded party members not to be easily influenced by slander or efforts to divide unity within PBB because political stability was an important prerequisite for continuing Sarawak's development agenda.
He said PBB also needs to continue to produce a line of competent young leaders to continue the struggle to defend Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), in addition to ensuring that the state remains on track to achieve development goals by 2030.
