SARAWAK MANUFACTURING SECTOR SECURES RM2.4 BLN INVESTMENT FOR 1Q 2024

KUCHING, May 15 (Bernama) -- Sarawak’s manufacturing sector recorded RM2.4 billion worth of investments for the implementation of 30 projects in the first quarter of this year (1Q 2024).

State Deputy Premier and Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said these investments are expected to create more than 2,000 employment opportunities mainly in the chemical products, basic metal products and non-metallic products segments.

Winding up the debate for his ministry at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly here, today, he said Sarawak has continued to attract new foreign and domestic direct investment interests and expansion.

“Among them are solar glass and mining of silica sand project (RM6.5 billion), data centre (RM18.6 billion) and expansion to manufacture battery components (RM1 billion),” he said.

Last year, he said the Sarawak government had approved investments totalling RM22.8 billion for the implementation of 339 projects that potentially could create about 4,500 job opportunities.

He said of the total, RM9.2 billion or 40.4 per cent was for the manufacturing sector, RM8.8 billion (38.6 per cent) for the services sector and RM4.8 billion (21 per cent) for the primary sector.

“In 2023, the manufacturing sector contributed 27.7 per cent to Sarawak’s total gross domestic product, creating 4,200 employment opportunities,” he added.
