SIBU, March 20 (Bernama) -- The Sibu Road Transport Department (JPJ) detained four timber lorries for overloading last night and vowed to continue cracking down on the road menace.

Sibu JPJ chief Mohamad Faizal David Jemat said overloaded timber lorries not only damaged roads but also posed a danger to other road users.

"Operations to detect lorries carrying excessive loads of cargo in the Sibu district will be conducted continuously," he said in a statement here today.

The four lorries were detained during an operation in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

"After being weighed at the Sibu JPJ compound, these lorries were found to be carrying timber loads exceeding between 59.05 and 86.90 per cent of the limit set in the Carrier Licence issued by the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board,” he said.

Faizal said the drivers were issued summonses under Section 19(1)(b)(vi) of the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987, which provides for a fine of between RM1,000 and RM10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both, on conviction.

He said JPJ would charge them in court soon.

He advised lorry operators to be more responsible by not carrying excessive loads.
