KUCHING, March 18 (Bernama) -- Indonesia has taken over the chairmanship of the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Business Council (BEBC) following the end of the term for Brunei.

In a statement today, BEBC said the handing over ceremony was held at the end of the BIMP-EAGA's strategic planning meeting here recently, where outgoing chairman Pengiran Haris Pengiran Duraman passed a baton to BEBC Indonesia's country director Dr Sayid Irwan to symbolically signify the handing over.

In his inaugural speech as the new chairman, Dr Sayid Irwan reiterated his commitment to champion BEBC’s efforts for a more prosperous and interconnected BIMP-EAGA.

Meanwhile, BEBC Malaysia chairman Nobel Pang congratulated the new chairman and hoped that the auspicious occasion would bring about a more united front and progress to sub-regional cooperation.

By tradition, the chairmanship of BEBC is rotated every three years among the four member countries. Malaysia is currently the vice-chair and will helm the organisation in 2027, when Indonesia’s term expires.

Apart from Pang, BEBC Malaysia is represented by two other country directors, namely Azhar Othman and Datuk Susan Chang.
