KUCHING, March 14 (Bernama) -- The government needs to examine and update laws related to consumer rights, especially to protect consumers from threats in the cyber world, says National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak chapter chairman Wynson Ong Teck Ping.

He said issues such as online fraud, personal data protection and fair access to digital services were among the aspects that needed to be emphasised at present.

"One of the main challenges in this digital era is the understanding and protection of user rights in the digital environment.

"However, the awareness and protection of consumer rights do not only depend on the actions of the government and companies, but also the active involvement of individuals," he said in a statement today.

He said companies should also take proactive steps to improve online security, provide clear and accurate information to users and provide fair access to digital services.

In conjunction with Consumer Rights Day on March 15, invited the public to commit to being wise, responsible, and proactive consumers in fighting for their rights.

According to him, MTPN’s role is to be the 'voice' of the Malaysian people in ensuring that consumer rights are upheld and advocated through various initiatives including awareness campaigns, talks, as well as collaborations with both government and private sectors.
