FIVE SHOPS IN KUCHING HERITAGE BUILDING RAZED BY FIRE
KUCHING, March 8 (Bernama) -- Five shops in a heritage building and a Toyota Avanza parked along Jalan Ewe Gai, near Carpenter Street here, were razed by fire today.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Tiong Ling Hii said they received an emergency call at 1.40 pm and dispatched fire engines and personnel from the Padungan and Batu Lintang stations to the scene.
“A car and two furniture shops were destroyed in the blaze while two shops were gutted 50 per cent and another shop was 30 per cent destroyed.
“The fire spread very fast … through the ceiling and roof to the neighbouring shop. We brought the blaze under control at 2.48 pm,” he told reporters at the scene.
He said that based on information from witnesses and shop owners, those who were in the premises managed to flee.
No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
