NORTH ZONE'S FLYING START WITH 10 GOLD MEDALS ON DAY ONE OF SUKSAR III

SIBU, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- The 2024 Sarawak Games (Suksar) opened today with the North Zone flying off the blocks by winning 10 gold medals to lead the three other zones in the third edition of the sports festival here which ends on Jan 18.

Eight of the gold medals from the North Zone contingent comprising Miri, Limbang and Bintulu were won through weightlifting and karate events while the other two came from cycling and wushu.

North Zone also won five silvers, with three coming from wushu and one each from weightlifting and karate, and 12 bronzes from wushu, karate, cycling and weightlifting.

Central Zone (Sibu, Mukah and Kapit) are the closest challengers with a haul of five gold, nine silver and 10 bronze medals.

South Zone (Kuching, Samarahan and Serian) are in third place with five gold, six silver and five bronze medals, while West Zone (Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei) floundered with a meagre five bronze medals.

A total of 1,365 athletes are taking part in the games featuring 13 types of sports. Sarawak Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu declared open the games at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today.

Suksar is part of Sarawak's preparations to host the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI, which will be held from Aug 17-24 with 37 sports to be contested.
