KUCHING, Jan 1 (Bernama) -- Boasting a 99-metre-tall flagpole, the Ibu Pertiwi Square is the latest addition to Kuching’s iconic landmarks.

The square, located near the State Legislative Assembly building and the Kuching Waterfront, was launched by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the state-level New Year’s Eve celebration yesterday.

Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Shell covered the costs for the monument’s construction through their corporate social responsibility initiative.

Abang Johari said he hoped the square would be a new attraction that could draw tourists to Kuching.

“We will also display the history of the three oil and gas companies (Petros, Petronas and Shell) at the square, in addition to information on the history of the economic development in Sarawak,” he said during a visit to the square here, today.

He said Ibu Pertiwi Square also has facilities for tourists to dine and enjoy the scenery.
