KUCHING, Dec 27 (Bernama) -- Gunung Santubong, about 35 kilometres north of Kuching, is the preferred destination for families during this year-end school holidays in Sarawak.

The 810-metre-high mountain, which is synonymous with the legendary story of Puteri Santubong and Puteri Sejinjang, offers the beauty of flora and fauna that cannot be found in urban areas.

Do Re Mi Zaini, a representative of the homestay operators in Santubong, said homestays are fully booked until early next month.

She said that not only families but also other parties, such as schools, have made reservations.

"Right now, the homestays are fully (booked). When it is the year-end school holidays, schools also organise various activities, including petanque, for their students.

In addition, visitors to Santubong usually engage in various activities such as picnics on the beach, mountain climbing and trips to the sea to watch dolphins," she said when contacted by Bernama.

According to her, there are 17 active homestay operators in Santubong, offering different types of houses, from traditional wooden houses to modern brick houses.

The Santubong accommodation coordinator at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) said the prices also depended on the size of the room or house.

"We offer rates starting from RM150 per night for a room. The price also depends on the number of people occupying the room or house," she said.
