KUCHING, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Sarawak state-owned SEDC Energy recently entered into a joint development agreement (JDA) with its Japanese partners for the H2ornbill project.

SEDC Energy said in a statement today that the agreement was signed between ENEOS, Sumitomo Corporation, and SEDC Energy in Kuching on Oct 25 and that“currently the three parties are working on the finer details of Project H2ornbill.”

It said the JDA between SEDC Energy, Sumitomo Corporation, and ENEOS outlines the collaborative establishment of a clean hydrogen supply chain, generating around 90,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen which is also inclusive of the 2,000 tonnes designated for local consumption in Sarawak.

SEDC Energy said Sarawak’s hydropower energy is the reason behind the two Japanese partners are part of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub in Bintulu.

“Within the JDA, SEDC Energy’s role will involve the spearheading of the technical aspects of hydrogen production, focusing on integrating and optimising the energy procurement process for the project.

“The goal for this project is to begin production of clean hydrogen by 2030 and all parties involved will be entering the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase soon,” according to the statement.

It said Bintulu was chosen for the hub’s location due to the existing petrochemical industrial complex, which has the advantage of being able to utilise existing facilities for methylcyclohexane (MCH) production that will be used to transport hydrogen to Japan.

SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation established in 2019. It is responsible for driving Sarawak’s hydrogen energy agenda and its downstream retail business.
