KUCHING, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development of Sarawak (KPWK) has implement several initiatives to enhance the skills and knowledge of the preschool educators in the state.

Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Rosey Yunus said this year, nine courses had been conducted involving 800 educators.

“For SeDidik, our state-owned early childhood education provider, the ministry has set a target to achieve 100 per cent of the 163 educators having at least diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) by 2025.

“As of October, 93.25 per cent or 152 educators have at least diploma in ECCE. The remaining 11 are still pursuing their studies and are expected to graduate in 2025,” she said when replying to a question from Ibrahim Baki (GPS-Satok) in the state legislative assembly here today.

Rosey said to ensure the accessibility of early childhood education at rural areas, the ministry through the Sarawak Early Childhood Development Council (MPAKS) will coordinate the establishment of preschools to avoid overlapping.

“The establishment of preschools especially in rural areas is based on the needs and request of the local communities and leaders.

“Currently, SeDidik has five preschools in Long Kawa, Long Kerangan, Long Leng, Long Jenalong and Ba’Selulong to cater the needs of Penan children,” she said.

Rosey added that based on the data from the Sarawak Education Department, 98.71 per cent of Standard One children attending the 2023/2024 academic year have attended preschools.

“For this year, the enrollment rate at government preschools is 66.14 per cent, which is 46,505 out of the total 70,305 preschool enrollments,” she said.
