KUCHING, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Sarawak police have identified eight individuals who have been banned from attending any planned assembly at the Sibu Court for a trial related to a riot case tomorrow.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the court order issued under Section 98 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be in force for seven days on those involved.

"This is a temporary order to prevent gatherings in cases of disturbance issued from tomorrow until Oct 23 to prevent those named from attending the gathering," he said in a press conference at the Sarawak Contingent Police headquarters (IPK) today.

The eight individuals are Mathew Mudai Umpi, Jonas Ling Lee King, Andrew Lau Chii Chuong, Alistair Lau Chii Kiat, Chua Yieng Hui, Lawrence Clement Ahsay, Napoleon Lawik and Alim@Giovanni Adlim Mideh.

He said if the individuals concerned disobey the order, they can be punished under Section 188 of the Penal Code which provides for a prison sentence of up to one month or a fine of RM400 or both.

"If the violation endangers life or may cause a riot, the person(s) could be punished with imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both," he said.

Mohd Azman also advised the public to refrain from attending the assembly to express support for those involved, as it may create a tense atmosphere that threatens public peace and order.

On another matter, he informed that 624 officers and policemen were assigned for the Jepak State Assembly by-election (PRK) to ensure security throughout the election period.

"Police would like to remind all voters and supporters of political parties to vote in a disciplined manner and to not cause any provocation throughout the campaigning period and on polling day," he said.

He said the by-election involves 22,804 voters, comprising 22,761 ordinary voters and 43 policemen who will vote at 15 polling stations through 46 polling streams (one for early voting).

The Election Commission has set voting day for the Jepak DUN by-election as Nov 4, while candidate nominations and early voting are on Oct 21 and Oct 31 respectively.

The Jepak state by-election is held following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, on Sept 15 (due to kidney complications).
