KAPIT, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- A Bailey bridge will be built as a temporary measure to facilitate the people in Ulu Katibas who are affected by the collapse of Sungai Musah bridge at Jalan Tekalit-Musah, 26km from Song bazaar.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said RM4.8 million will be allocated for the purpose and the cost to facilitate the people’s daily crossing of Sungai Musah.

“The Public Works Department is targeting the Bailey bridge to be completed within a month and I am confident they can do it within that period,” said Uggah, who is also Sarawak’s Infrastructure and Port Development Minister.

He was met by reporters after visiting the collapsed Sungai Musah Bridge today.

During the visit, Uggah was briefed by Sarawak Public Works Department officials on the incident.

Uggah also said that a consultant has been appointed to study what had caused the bridge to collapse and when it has been completed the government will decide on the next course of action.

He assured the safety of all the bridges in Sarawak are well taken care of and they are inspected monthly by the authority.

“It was so unfortunate that this had to occur to Sungai Musah bridge and we apologise to the people for the inconveniences caused,” he said.

The construction works of the RM55 million bridge commenced on May 27, 2011, and were completed on Feb 18, 2014.

Nobody was injured when the 166-metre-long bridge collapsed at about 9.30 pm on Sept 21.
