KUCHING, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is prepared to face the eventuality of floods and heavy rains brought by the North East Monsoon (MTL) winds.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS), in a statement, said the agency is prepared in terms of human resources, logistics and food aid.

"JPBNS, through the response agencies such as the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force,  with a strength of 5,501 personnel and assisted by logistics involving  487 land assets, 249 sea and river assets, 12 air assets and 207 support assets, are ready to face the transitional phase of the monsoon.

"In terms of the supply of disaster relief, the Social Welfare Department has ensured sufficient supply at all storage depots, office depots and also forward bases," it said.

It said JPBNS has also identified 627 relief centres which are capable of accommodating up to 162,091 victims.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a warning of the start of the Monsoon Transition Phase last Sept 19, whereby there will be thunderstorms, usually bringing heavy rain and strong winds with the potential to cause flash floods.
