PGB RECIPIENT MICHAEL RIMAN LAID TO REST AT SARAWAK HEROES' MAUSOLEUM

KUCHING, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- The late Major (R) Michael Riman Bugat, 71, who was honoured the Panglima Gagah Berani (PGB) medal, was laid to rest at the Heroes' Mausoleum today with a full military honour ceremony follows his passing on Monday (Aug 7).

His remains, which were kept at the Civic Center since yesterday to enable the public to offer their last respects, was transferred to the Heroes' Mausoleum this morning for the burial ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by some 200 individuals, including Malaysian Infantry First Division commander Major General Hassan Embong, Department of Military Veteran Affairs (JHEV) of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) director-general Major General Zambry Jefry Darus, Third Infantry Brigade of Malaysia commander Brigadier-General Adnan Hashim, and Sarawak Police Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.

Meanwhile, Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP) and Panglima Gagah Berani (PGB) Medal Holders Association patron Lieutenant General (R) Datuk Mohd Zaini Mohd Said said the late Michael was recognised as a "Bujang Berani" (Iban language for hero) for his brave stand against communist insurgents in the 1970s.

"I feel sad about his unexpected passing and immensely proud of his lifelong sacrifices for the country," he told reporters during the ceremony.

Riman and another recipient of the SP and PGB medals from Sarawak, the late Second Warrant Officer Datuk Kanang Langkau, were under Mohd Zaini's command when he was a Major stationed at the Second Brigade Headquarters in Ipoh, Perak.

"I will miss him (Michael Riman) as my Iban brother (in the military)," he added.
