KUCHING, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is looking forward to using slag, a by-product from the smelting or refining of ore in its future road construction projects, State Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said.

Uggah who is on an official visit to Japan to learn about the country’s road technology said the state will formulate guidelines for using slag as a road construction material with the road construction at Samalaju in Bintulu serving as the pioneer for such an initiative.

“In Sarawak, slag is being produced by ferroalloy industries at the Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu amounting to 100,000 tons per annum, and is classified as a waste product. We are here to understand the process of the slag application, (in terms of) its suitability, durability and safety.

"We also want to know the comparative advantages in cost savings in aggregates and others towards a more sustainable future. This is in line with our POST COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) aspiration to achieve 100 per cent rural road connectivity,” he said in a statement after visiting the Land Development Department Construction Management Division, in Chiba prefecture, Japan today.

He added that the use of slag is within a 40 kilometres radius of a steel factory, incorporating the road construction involving the Chiba prefecture which has years of experience in road development.
