KUCHING, May 28 (Bernama) -- The people of Sarawak, regardless of background or religious beliefs, must remain united to continue the state government's efforts in developing its economy, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the Sarawak Merdeka Convoy flagging-off ceremony at Lawas Public Park, today, he said that the positive economic impact in the state has the potential to make Sarawak a generator of economic growth in Malaysia.

“Hence, we (Sarawakians) must maintain our unity, and in remembering 60 years of independence, we must have a new direction and continue to train our younger generation, as part of our development efforts in the next 60 years,” he said.

He said Sarawak’s economic transition, which is now based on a green economy, can also be an example to other countries.

Themed ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur’, the Merdeka convoy will be the main event among nine large-scale programmes, organised in conjunction with Sarawak's 60th Independence celebration.

The convoy, lasting 56 days, will cover a journey of 3,516 km from the northern to the southern part of Sarawak, starting from Limbang to Kuching, from today until July 22.
