NATIONAL UNITY WEEK SETS RECORD FOR MOST PARTICIPANTS WEARING ETHNIC ATTIRE
KUCHING, May 21 (Bernama) -- The scorching weather is not a hindrance for people to dress up in colourful ethnic attire and gather at the Darul Hana Bridge and around the Kuching Esplanade here in conjunction with the National Unity Week 2023 celebration.
A total of 2,471 participants from various races and religions registered from 6.30 am to 3 pm today and made it into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the Most Participants Wearing Ethnic Attire In An Event category.
The participants donned various traditional attire of the multi-ethnic Malaysians such as Melanau, Kedayan, Iban, Lun Bawang, the Indigenous community of Mah Meri, Kadazan, Murut, Chinese and Punjabi.
The National Unity Ministry, in a statement today, said the record attempt received participation from pre-schoolers, pupils, tertiary students, Neighbourhood Watch communities and the general public.
According to the statement, the MBOR certificate was also given for the Most Ethnic Cultural Display In An Exhibition category, with the participation of 17 ethnic groups in conjunction with the National Unity Week celebration.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang received the recognition certificates for both categories from MBOR research analyst Siti Nurhanim Mohd Noh and accounts executive Mohamad Nazrul Hafizi Ahmad Fauzi tonight.
“The records for these two categories are not just to get recognition, but this programme clearly proves the closeness, harmony and unity among people of various races, ethnicities and religions. This is what unity in diversity means,” the statement read.
The National Unity Week 2023 was also conducted in 15 locations nationwide, including Bertam Square, Penang; Papar Community Hall, Sabah; Dataran Tasik Kluang, Johor and Pantai Balok Recreation Centre, Kuantan, Pahang.
With the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’, the main objective of Unity Week is to boost the spirit of unity and spread knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the diversity of customs and cultures in Malaysian society.
