KUCHING, May 9 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) has received strong demand to reintroduce direct flights between the state and China.

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said there used to be direct flights from Kuching to Shenzhen, China, but the service was halted after one year of operation.

“We certainly welcome direct flights from China to Sarawak. Many business, tourism and logistics stakeholders have also requested for the re-introduction of the Kuching-Shenzhen-Kuching flight service as well as to explore potential new direct flights between Sarawak and China,” he said in a statement today.

Lee added that direct air connectivity between China and Sarawak will play a huge role in spurring the growth of Sarawak’s tourism, trade, investment and logistics sectors.

Yesterday, the minister received a courtesy visit from China’s Aviation International Construction and Investment Co Ltd and China Aviation Investment Group Co Ltd at his office.

Lee said the main purpose of the visit was to discuss and improve the connectivity between China and Sarawak as well as other investment opportunities in the state.

“Members of the delegation were getting insights and information on Sarawak, including the facilities and supports to accommodate arrivals from China for tourism, business and logistic purposes,” he added.
