KUCHING, March 29 (Bernama) -- The number of sporting events to be contested in the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak will not be increased despite calls from certain parties to do so.

Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the National Sports Council (MSN) had decided to list 32 events for the Games and this has been agreed by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and all state executive council members holding the sports portfolio at a recent meeting.

"We have all agreed. I don't think we will open to more (events). For this Sukma 2024, (not only) ‘kabaddi’ but canoeing is also not on the list of contested events," he said in a press conference here today.

He was commenting on the demand by sports fans on social media for more sports events to be added to the Games, including kabaddi.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim announced that Sarawak had won the bid to host the 2023 Asian Association for Sports Management Conference which will be held here on Aug 19 and 20.

He said the conference, expected to be attended by 500 participants from more than 25 countries, would see sports stakeholders explore research collaboration, practical placements and also sports data management opportunities.
