KUCHING, March 21 (Bernama) -- Borneo Highlands Resort now belongs to the Sarawak government and will be developed to become one of the state’s main tourist destinations.

Borneo Highlands Resort, located in a mountainous area, was previously a privately owned resort and the state government will give it a new lease of life before reopening to the public later.

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Borneo Highlands has great potential because of its beautiful scenery and the fact that it is strategically located about 45 minutes from Kuching city.

“As such, the state government will plan something that is not only beneficial in terms of the tourism industry but will also benefit the community in the area.

“For example, Cameron Highlands and Fraser’s Hill not only can attract domestic and foreign visitors but they also benefit residents in those areas,” he said after the Sarawak State Tourism Steering Committee meeting, here, today.

In another development, Abdul Karim said that from January to February, the number of tourist arrivals in Sarawak increased by 600,037, which is an increase of 310.2 per cent compared to the same period last year.

“These numbers are about 90 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels compared to the same corresponding period in 2019, which is very much in line with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) forecast,” he said.
