KUCHING, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is ready to host the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma) if given the opportunity, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

However, he said the federal government would need to inform the state earlier so that it would be able to repair and upgrade all existing sports facilities and infrastructures.

“We (Sarawak) will distribute a special allocation for sports development… I also suggested to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh during a recent meeting that the hosting of Sukma is rotated (among the states) like in Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak.

“We also want to jointly develop national sports and improve the quality of national athletes. For example, we have (national diver) Pandelela (Rinong) and (powerlifter) Bonnie (Bunyau Gustin),” he said today.

He said this at the presentation of incentives to athletes who had competed in the 20th Sukma 2022; 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam; ASEAN Para Games in Indonesia and 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Also present were state Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and state Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

Cash incentives totalling RM755,000 was given to Sarawak athletes who won medals in the events they competed in.
