KUCHING, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government wants graduates of public and private institutions of higher learning (IPT) in the state to have the qualifications and skills required by the industry, said state Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He said that although the institutions are expected to be able to produce over 10,000 graduates at the degree and diploma level this year, the main challenge is their employability.

“We don’t want them (Sarawak graduates) to only become operators. We want them to be technicians in the industry, (therefore) they need to be qualified and able to carry out the job,” he told reporters after officiating at the INTI Education Counseling Centre here today.

Sagah said that based on the current industry development data in Sarawak, most of the jobs created are technical in nature, which has led the state government to encourage the next generation of students to take up technical majors in their studies.

“The challenge for us is to produce sufficient skilled workers. That’s why we encourage our children to take a technical major in their studies. We have to change with time,” he added.
