CLAIMS OF OVER 100 PCT HIKE IN S'WAK'S QUIT RENT RATE INACCURATE - LAND DEPT

KUCHING, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- The increase in Sarawak’s quit rent rate that is to take effect on Jan 1 does not exceed 100 per cent of the old rate, Sarawak Land and Survey Department director Datuk Abdullah Julaihi said.

He said reports of the new rate going up by 400 to 700 per cent were inaccurate.

Abdullah said the hike involved 59,710 of the 734,388 land title deeds registered in Sarawak.

“The claims and figures of the new quit rent rate increasing by 400 to 700 percent are inaccurate and misleading.

“In fact, the revision done on the rates also involves a reduction between seven to 20 per cent for several types of land use,” he said in a statement here today.

Abdullah said the new rate is also one of the lowest in Malaysia when compared to other major cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Ipoh, George Town and Johor Bahru.

On Dec 28, the Sarawak Land and Survey Department informed that 59,710 out of a total of 734,388 land title deeds registered in Sarawak were involved in the revision of the quit rent rate effective Jan 1.

It said the review was carried out following intensive development in the city and its surrounding areas, which resulted in the land category in an area being upgraded.
