SARIKEI, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- The Julau parliamentary constituency which covers the Meluan and Rakan state assemblies is expected to enjoy development projects in the future, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said this was because both areas were within the jurisdiction of the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA) which is responsible for transforming rural areas and improve the comfort and prosperity of the people.

"Both representatives, Tan Sri William Mawan (Pakan Assemblyman and Roland Duat Tile (Meluan Assemblyman) have proposed several projects that would change the existing landscape of Julau,” he said in his speech at the "Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’ (Leader With The People) programme in Julau, today.

According to him, the agricultural sector in Julau was growing rapidly, especially in the production of black pepper which has helped the people in the area to increase their income.

He said life in Julau was getting better as can be seen with the increase in the number of vehicles in the area with residents asking for a petrol station to be built in the area.

Abang Johari who is also the Gabung Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman said development is more organised following the close cooperation between the state and federal governments through the Julau Member of Parliament.

Julau lost one term of comprehensive planning when it fell into the hands of independent candidate Datuk Larry Soon @ Larry Sng Wei Shein during the 14th Election (GE14) in 2018.

Abang Johari also said he hoped that Julau can be represented by GPS representatives in order to have a conducive approach from a strong group to join the federal government so as to develop the area.

At the event, he also announced that the Sarawak government had approved an allocation of RM74 million for a water supply project in Julau which will be carried out by the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB).

Also in the pipeline is the construction of a petrol station, a multi-purpose hall, and a river bank project.

The contest for the Julau parliamentary seat in GE15 will see a four-cornered tussle with the incumbent Larry Soon, now representing Parti Bangsa Malaysia, facing challenges from GPS candidate Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, Suhana Abdullah@Susan Georga (Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak) and Elly Lawai Ngalai (Independent).
