LAKMNS plans to expand Semariang Muslim Cemetery in Kuching
KUCHING, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust (LAKMNS) plans to expand the Semariang Muslim Cemetery area which is expected to be run out of space within the next five years.
LAKMNS chief executive officer Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said discussions on the matter had been held with the State Land and Survey Department.
He said 70 per cent of the 25 hectares of the burial ground had already been used.
“On average, eight bodies are buried a day here, so this burial ground is expected to be full within another four to five years
Therefore, we have made efforts to apply for land around this cemetery and it will be managed by the Land and Survey Department,” he told reporters after officiating the eco-friendly gazebo at the Semariang Muslim Cemetery today.
Abang Abdul Wahap said currently, there are almost 16,500 graves at the largest Muslim cemetery in Sarawak.
Meanwhile, he informed that the construction of the Semariang Muslimg Cemetery Complex was expected to be completed by the end of this year.
