KUCHING, July 19 (Bernama) -- An astronomy complex will be built Pantai Damai near here a in a move to promote the study of astronomy among the young generation in the state, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the complex would be the third astronomy project under the Sarawak Mufti's Department, with the first, an astronomy centre in Miri, which was completed in July last year and another in Bintulu, to be completed soon.

"This will allow us to study astronomy, including the galaxies, as astronomy is very important in the digital world now," he told reporters after opening the Sarawak Fatwa Seminar here today.

The seminar, organised by the Sarawak Mufti Department, was also attended by the State Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications,  Datuk Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is also the Pantai Damai State Assemblyman, and the State Mufti, Datuk Kipli Yassin.

Apart from being a centre of knowledge, Abang Johari said the proposed complex would also attract more Muslim tourists to Pantai Pamai, which is one of Sarawak's ecotourism areas.

Abang Johari said the setting up of the astronomy centres in the state was supported by several universities operating in Sarawak following their discussions with the Sarawak Mufti Department, which among others, to make astronomy as part of the study programmes offered by the universities concerned.

The role of the department is also important in providing guidelines for development planning in Sarawak, especially in ensuring the production of value-added products using new technology in the state do not contradict Islamic teachings, he added.
