Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre capable of unearthing more talent in S'wak - Abang Jo
SIBU, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre in Sibu Jaya is capable of helping Sarawak produce not only more athletes at the national level but also world-class ones, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.
He said the RM13.9 million facility is able to produce sports talents with great potential to bring glory to the state.
“We have lots of potential in Sarawak when it comes to sports, and I am confident that with this facility in Sibu Jaya, and with good coaches, we are able to train our athletes for the international stage,” he said when officiating the launch of the centre and also the 6th Special Olympics Sarawak State Games here today.
Construction of the centre, funded by Amcorp Group Berhad through the Azman Hashim Foundation began before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The centre has complete indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
Abang Johari said Sibu Jaya, which was developed 25 years ago, has now become a satellite town to Sibu town and enjoys various development enjoyed by more than 30,000 residents.
He said the focus of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s development plans in Sibu was in the Bukit Assek area, a location often affected by floods.
“A new approach is being planned for the Bukit Assek area. This is not a promise but maybe Sibu can be as beautiful as Amsterdam with its water canals that are able to attract many visitors," he said without giving further details.
Amcorp Group executive chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim, in his speech, hoped that more sports events involving all levels would be brought to Sibu Jaya in the future.
He said this was to boost economic activities in Sibu Jaya apart from unearthing sports talent that could be trained to become world-class athletes such as Sarawak diver Datuk Pandelela Rinong.
