SERIAN (Sarawak), June 20 (Bernama) -- A total of 1,109 cooperatives operating in Sarawak have managed to generate a total income of RM311.1 million as of December 31 last year, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said.

He, who is also Sarawak Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment (Mintred), said based on statistics from the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission of Malaysia (SKM), these cooperatives also have assets worth RM636.4 million apart from share ownership and fees amounting to RM216.5 million.

“Obviously, this cooperative movement is able to drive the country’s economic development, especially Sarawak, to a stronger level,” he said at the opening ceremony of the Sarawak state level National Cooperative Day 2022 and the Years of Cooperative Movement in Malaysia celebration here today.

He said the state cooperative movement could be further strengthened through the collaboration that had been outlined under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) implemented by the Sarawak State Government starting last year.

Awang Tengah said PCDS 2030 aimed to further develop Sarawak’s economy at least twofold by 2030 with the aspiration of making the state a developed and high-income status by that year.

“Therefore, I call on the cooperatives in the state to continue to increase their competitiveness and work hard to make changes towards the transformation of Sarawak,” he added.
