KUCHING, May 28 (Bernama) -- The coastal settlement of Belawai in central Sarawak which is about 480km north of here, can be developed as a tourist location that can compete with other popular destinations such as Hawaii.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said with its beautiful natural beaches, the state government was ready to provide infrastructure for the development of projects such as waterfront parks and other tourist facilities to attract visitors to the area.

“Apart from waterfront development, we can also build motorhome parks as well as provide connection to electricity and water supply. If we can do it like how it is done in western countries, Belawai can be like Hawaii,” he said.

Speaking at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering in Belawai today, he said the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry through its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, plans to promote motorhome tourism.

"When the coastal road (Sarawak Coastal Road project) is ready, it will be easy for tourists to travel here using their motorhomes and their arrival will boost the local economy," added Abang Johari.
