KUCHING, Feb 10  -- The Sarawak government has allocated RM40 million to hold tourism, youth and sports events this year, said Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said the allocation had been provided for the past two years but was not utilised due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The allocation was returned (to the Sarawak government) but this year the allocation will be given back. That is the government’s financial procedure,” he told a press conference after attending the presentation session on Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Ministry’s Strategic Plan here today.

Abdul Karim, who is also Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, said among the events planned was the Rainforest World Music Festival which was held virtually last year but still managed to reach hundreds of thousands of spectators around the world.

“Besides that, the allocation will also be used to organise the Spartan Race which has previously attracted many participants from other countries,” he added.
